Harvard Club Mobile Marketing Event – Tuesday, October 18th

Explore how to reach consumers in an increasingly mobile-centric world! Join us for an event hosted by the Harvard Club of Minnesota regarding the exciting growth and future of mobile marketing.
A new partnership between NYU and the University of the People (UOP), an online school offering free classes, marks the University’s continuing commitment to education on a global scale, and honors the inspiration of Stern faculty members who have been committed to this unique institution since its inception 2 years ago.
University of the People, founded in 2009 by Israeli entrepreneur Shai Reshef, offers education in business and computer science using mostly volunteer professors and course materials available free online. While not yet accredited, the school serves English-speaking students from 115 countries, including individuals from war-torn and otherwise impacted regions of the world where education is not likely to be available.
John Sexton, the president of N.Y.U., was recently interviewed in the New York Times about the partnership, which offers students with exceptional promise after at least of year of studies at UOP to apply to NYU’s Abu Dhabi campus and be eligible for financial aid. “Our Mission is spreading our education and knowledge, and if we can find some amazing kids from Sub-Saharan Africa or Haiti though this wonderful vehicle of the University of the People and set an example among elite schools with resources, so much the better. Mr. Sexton said there were no specific promises of slots for UOP students, but he hoped a few might be admitted to N.Y.U.’s Abu Dhabi campus by 2012.
Several faculty members, particularly from The Stern School of Business, have been working with the University of the People on a volunteer basis since the school began. Russell Winer, chairman of the marketing department at N.Y.U.’s Stern School of Business, is chairman of the University of the People business administration department; Alexander Tuzhilin, a professor of information systems at the Stern School, serves as chairman of the University of the People computer science department; and Paul Affuso, an associate dean at the Stern School, is the University of the People’s chief financial officer.
Mr. Sexton said he hoped the collaboration would encourage more NYU faculty and graduate students to work with the online institution.

Stern Minnesota and NYU Clubs Jointly Welcome Twin Cities Inter-Club Alumni at Margaret Anderson Kelliher Networking Reception

Minneapolis, March 14, 2011 – The Stern Alumni of Minnesota Club in partnership with NYU Club of Minnesota welcomed a broad cross-section of Twin Cities inter-club alumni at our recent networking event with Margaret Anderson Kelliher, President, Minnesota High Tech Association.

The event was graciously underwritten by Dick Saliterman of Saliterman & Siefferman, PC (Columbia Law, NYU Law) and Dick Weinrib of MVP Marketing + Design, Inc. (NYU WSC, Stern).

Warmly introduced by Sonal Patney of the NYU Club of Minnesota, Ms. Kelliher spoke about the future of Minnesota business, our High Tech-based economy and the importance of STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math) to the children of the State of Minnesota.

Attending the event were not only alumni from NYU (including Law, Stern, and WSC), but a strong turnout of those from the Minnesota-based clubs of Columbia, Penn, Wharton, Harvard, HBS, Yale, Chicago, Booth, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, the Twin Cities Interclub which was represented by its members from Amherst, Middlebury and Wesleyan, as well guests from Ohio State, UW-Madison, Hamline, UVA, the University of Minnesota, Brown and the “School of Hard Knocks!” (Our apologies to anyone we missed!)

And finally, special thanks to Margaret Anderson Kelliher who helped make this interclub event so enjoyable and informative. We hope to see as many of you as we can at our next venue. Please check back soon.

The Stern Alumni Club of Minnesota has decided to contribute to the Mayo Fund Established on Behalf of Arne’s Brother-In-Law, the Late Dr. Dale Shepard.

This past December, former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson spoke at the NYU Alumni Clubs of Minnesota reception. As an honorarium commemorating Arne’s extraordinary presentation, despite the passing of his brother-in-law Dale Shepard that same day, the Stern Club would like to say thanks by supporting Brain Cancer Awareness and Research on his behalf. The Governor went to bat for us. Now it’s our turn to say thanks to both Arne and his understanding wife, Dale’s sister, Susan.

If you would like to say thank you too, please make a private gift to Brains Together for a Cure, the family’s designated charity. This fine organization promotes brain tumor and effective treatment awareness by funding research at the Mayo Clinic.

The Stern Alumni Club of Minnesota would appreciate your help with this gift to recognize the sacrifice Arne made when he kept his speaking commitment to our group under the most trying circumstances.

Donations may now be made online or by printing a Donation Form and mailing a tax deductible check to Brains Together for a Cure.

IMPORTANT: Please use the appropriate form to designate that your donation is being made in connection with the “Stern Club of Minnesota” in memory of the late Doctor Dale Dana Shepard.

Here are a few photos from this past December’s event:
